What glutathione is

Glutathione is a tripeptide, meaning a small molecule built from three amino acids: glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. The cysteine component carries a thiol group, and that thiol is where most of its activity comes from.

It is often described as the body's master antioxidant, and the description is reasonable. Glutathione is the most abundant intracellular antioxidant, present at millimolar concentrations inside cells, which is far higher than most other antioxidant molecules.

It exists in two forms. Reduced glutathione, written GSH, is the active form. Oxidized glutathione, written GSSG, is what remains after it has neutralized a reactive species. The ratio between them is used as a measure of cellular oxidative state, and a shifting ratio is one of the more meaningful indicators of oxidative stress.

What it does in normal physiology

Two roles are worth separating.

The first is direct antioxidant activity. Glutathione neutralizes reactive oxygen species and free radicals that are produced continuously as a byproduct of normal metabolism. It also regenerates other antioxidants, including vitamins C and E, returning them to active form after they have been used.

The second is detoxification. In the liver, glutathione is central to phase II conjugation, the process by which the body binds compounds to make them water-soluble and excretable. Glutathione S-transferase enzymes attach glutathione to a range of substances so they can be cleared. This is a documented, routine part of hepatic function rather than a wellness concept.

Why it depletes

Glutathione is consumed as it works. Each molecule that neutralizes a reactive species or conjugates a compound is used in the process, and the body must recycle or resynthesize it.

Synthesis depends on availability of its constituent amino acids, particularly cysteine, which is often the rate-limiting one. Levels decline with age, and are further drawn down by oxidative burden, illness, and metabolic stress.

Why intravenous

This is one of the clearer cases for IV delivery, for a specific biochemical reason.

Oral glutathione is poorly bioavailable. As a tripeptide it is substantially broken down by digestive enzymes into its constituent amino acids before absorption, which means what reaches circulation is largely the building blocks rather than intact glutathione. This is well documented and is why oral glutathione supplementation is often approached indirectly, through precursors such as N-acetylcysteine, rather than through the molecule itself.

Intravenous administration delivers intact glutathione into circulation, bypassing digestive breakdown entirely. That is a straightforward pharmacokinetic distinction.

Glutathione is often used to complement the recovery phase, though where it sits in your sequence depends on your protocol and your physician's direction.
